The paper presents how mankind gradually learned to treat fractured bones and how the most effective methods of bone fixation were developed through a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the locomotor system.
The history of osteosynthesis practically developed under our eyes, in the second part of the 20th century. The contribution of Polish specialists to the development of modern techniques of bone connection is also presented, including the design of bone-adjoining connection systems of the Zespol and Polfix type.
